Angels and Pioneers remain on top with week-end split

Angels Win Big Against Pioneers

The Angels yet again got another outstanding mound performance from starting pitcher Jake Hummel. However, Hummel silenced the Pioneers with his bat more so than his arm. He finished the day at the plate with five hits in seven at bats. He also drove in six runs as the Angels beat the Hoboken Pioneers 18-10 in an offensive showcase from both teams.

The first five Angel batters scored in the top of the first inning. Thomas Vandenabeele drew a leadoff walk and then second baseman Greg Van Sickler laced a line drive home run over the left field fence to quickly plate two runs. Starting pitcher Jake Hummel then drilled a line drive into the left field corner for a double. After a walk to Williams Rosario, Vincent King hit a single to center to load the bases. Adrien Geuquet delivered with a single through the right side to plate Hummel. Jerome Sana stepped up and was hit by a fastball with bases loaded to plate the fourth Angel run of the inning. Ludovic Geuquet drove in the final run of the inning with a fielder’s choice groundball to third base, whose only play was Geuquet at first. All nine starters stepped to the plate in the first inning.

Hummel threw seven strong innings, giving up four runs on ten hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out seven. The Pioneers did not score on him until the sixth inning when David Herssens led off with a single to right and then second baseman Alberto Valerio hit a two run home run to deep left center.

Left-hander Thomas Vandenabeele came on in relief of Hummel to start the eighth inning, with Namur leading 13-4. However, Vandenabeele was touched up for six runs (two earned) in the inning, and the pioneers cut the lead to three heading into the ninth. Taking advantage of three walks in the inning, Namur was able to post four insurance runs in the top of the ninth for right-hander Cedric Nauts, who came on in relief of Vandenabeele late in the eighth inning. After recording the first out on a come backer to the pitcher, an error and a walk put runners at first and second for the Pioneers. It seemed as though the relentless Pioneers would strike again in the inning, but Nauts was able to get two fly outs to end the threat.

Shortstop Vincent King finished the day at the plate 4-7 with two doubles and four runs batted in. Namur pounded 16 hits for 18 runs in the game, five of the 16 for extra bases. The Angels improve to 6-1 on the year and finish the weekend series against the Pioneers tomorrow.

Pioneers Silence Angels Bats

After a very strong offensive Saturday, the Angels were unable to scratch a run across the board in a 3-0 loss to the Hoboken Pioneers. Namur could not find an answer to Pioneers starter Kenny Van Den Branden, who went all nine innings, giving up four hits, struck out nine, and held the Angels scoreless for the first time this season. Namur did make for an interesting ninth inning after Greg Van Sickler led off with an infield single, and Jake Hummel then walked. However, with runners at first and second and no outs, the tying run at the plate, Van Den Branden was able to record the final three outs of the game with two fly balls and a strikeout.

The Pioneers plated their first two runs in the bottom half of the first inning when Angels starting pitcher Kevin Desmedt walked leadoff batter Randy Giorgiadis and then center fielder Dave Herssens hit a single to left. Both runners advanced into scoring position via passed ball. With runners at second and third, second baseman Alberto Valerio grounded out to shortstop, deep enough to plate Giorgiadis from third and advance Herssens to third base. With Dennis De Quint at the plate, a fastball in the dirt skipped to the backstop and Herssens scored from third base. Desmedt was able to force De Quint to groundout to short and then recorded a strikeout to end the inning. The Pioneers final run came an inning later when Gregory Lambrechts hit a leadoff double to right center to start the second inning. Desmedt then balked Lambrechts to third base, and with a runner at third and no outs, right fielder Roy D’Oliveira singled to left for the Pioneers third and final run.

Despite scoring in the first two innings, the Pioneers were held scoreless the rest of the game. Desmedt was relieved after 4.1 innings of work. He gave up three runs on four hits, walked three, and struck out one. Nicolas Migeot then came in and closed the door. He held the Pioneers scoreless for 3.2 innings of relief, giving up only one hit, walking two, and striking out two. He forced the Pioneers into groundball double plays in the sixth and eighth innings.

Namur only had four hits on the day. Two of the came from DH Vincent King, who finished 2-4 on the day. Julien Soree and Greg Van Sickler each had one hit for the vistors. After a weekend split, the Angels fall to 6-2 on the season. Namur plays again this weekend against the Antwerp Eagles.

Angels sweep Braves - improve record to 4-0

The Namur Angels captured another victory on Saturday against the Brasschaat Braves. Battling wet weather all day, the game was called in the top of the eighth inning after the field surface was deemed unplayable. The Angels sealed the victory being ahead 11-5 (Note: Official score 8-5 as inning wasn’t ended).

The bats came alive for the Angels as both Adrien Geuquet and Greg Van Sickler were a triple short of the cycle. Geuquet was 3-4 with 3 RBI while Van Sickler was 4-5 with 2 doubles on the day. After the two run blast from Geuquet in the top of the second inning put Namur ahead, Van Sickler hit a solo shot to right field to lead off the third. In the top of the fourth inning, right fielder Jake Hummel delivered a bases loaded double off the right center fence to run the score 5-0. Wiliams Rosario then plated Hummel with a single to left. Hummel was 2-4 on the day, driving in three runs.

The Braves cut the Angels lead to within 5 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Angels starter Cedric Desmedt was touched up for 3 runs. After scoring one run in the third inning, the Braves started the fourth with a leadoff walk to Idelgardo Raap. Desmedt then fanned the next two Braves batters before issuing back-to-back walks. Raap was able to score after a stolen base and two passed balls. Christophe De La Hamayde then hit a two out, two run single to left field to run the score 8-4 after four complete innings. Desmedt finished the inning and left the game after four innings pitched, giving up four runs on five hits, walked four and struck out four. He was relieved by Nicolas Migeot, who pitched the remaining three innings. Migeot allowed only one more Braves run to cross home plate before the game was called due to rain. The Angels pounded out 14 hits for 11 runs, 6 of those being extra base hits.

Sunday’s game was a walk to remember. The Angels posted an 11-0 victory, called after seven innings due to the mercy rule. They capitalized on 15 walks issued by four different Braves pitchers. Namur took a commanding lead with a six run third after five straight walks, a shortstop error, a sac fly by Cedric Nauts, and another walk. The Angels went on to score three more in the sixth and two in the seventh to seal up their fourth straight victory.

The Angels got a tremendous performance from starter Jake Hummel. He went the distance giving up no runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out six. Hummel ran into trouble in the bottom of the second when he had bases loaded with one out. He was able to get Thomas Vanden Eynde to fly out to second base, and then forced Arno Bracke into an inning ending groundball to shortstop. The Angels collected only four hits on the day, but were able to capitalize on errors and walks. Namur improves to 4-0 on the year and faces the Port of Antwerp Greys next weekend.

Namur makes strong start in 2012 season

The Namur Angels opened up their 2012 campaign with a pair of victories after a weekend sweep of the Borgerhout Squirrels. In Saturday’s contest, the Angels came out victorious after fighting back from an early deficit. The Squirrels jumped out to a 5-0 lead, capitalizing on a few walks from Angels’ starter Cedric Desmedt and advancing extra bases on several passed balls. Desmedt left the game after four innings of work giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits, 5 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Nicolas Migeot started the fifth inning for the Angels in relief, and held the Squirrels scoreless for the remainder of the game. He allowed 0 runs on 4 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 3 in five masterful innings for the Angels.

Down 5-0 in the fifth, the Angels got things started when Cedric Nauts singled to start the frame. Ludovic Geuquet doubled to left center, advancing Nauts to third. With two runners in scoring position, catcher Julien Soree grounded out to second base, plating Nauts and advancing Geuquet to third. Leadoff hitter Thomas Vandenabeele then grounded out to shortstop, bringing across another Angels run. After five innings, the lead had been cut to 5-2 in favor of the Squirrels.

In the top of the sixth, after a one out walk to designated hitter Williams Angel Rosario, Jake Hummel laced a double into the right center gap, holding Rosario at third base. Adrien Geuquet, the Angels’ left fielder, delivered a sacrifice fly to center, plating Rosario. With the score 5-3, Cedric Nauts smacked a line drive off of Squirrel’s starter Yannick Gonthier, and an errant throw by the second baseman allowed Hummel to score from second base. The Angel’s delivered in the top of the sixth and cut the Borgerhout lead to one.

A four run seventh inning for the Angels started with a Squirrels pitching change. Gonthier was relieved after six innings for right-hander Jason Jie Sam Foek. In the top of the seventh inning, a leadoff walk to Vandenabeele and a passed ball allowed him to advance to second. Shortstop Vincent King then delivered the tying run with a line drive single to right field. The go ahead run came in the same inning when Hummel singled to left center and brought home Greg Van Sickler. After a string of errors, walks, and hit batsmen, the Squirrels finally ended the nightmare seventh when relief pitcher Glenn Mareels recorded a strike out. From there, the Angels would take a lead it would not relinquish. In the 9-5 victory, Ludovic Geuquet was 2-5 with 2 RBI, while both Hummel and Van Sickler each drove in a run with a 2-5 performance, respectively. William Gilmore reached base 4 out of 5 times recording 2 hits and 3 stolen bases for the Squirrels.

The weekend series concluded on Sunday with another Angels’ victory in an 11-4 win. Namur quickly jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead after singles from Thomas Vandenabeele, Theodore De Bellefroid, and Greg Van Sickler loaded the bases to start the game. Williams Angel Rosario then crushed a bases clearing double to the right center gap. That was all the offense Angels starter Greg Van Sickler needed for his European debut. Van Sickler was perfect for the first three innings of the game, before running into trouble in the fourth. He surrendered his first hit of the game in the fourth inning to Squirrels’ centerfielder Steven Delannoy. After his single, Delannoy then stole second and Van Sickler walked Dennis Ribbens the next at bat. After a sac bunt by catcher Sam Boermans to advance the runners, Kevin Vervloet delivered a sac fly to plate Delannoy for the Squirrels’ first run. A walk to William Gilmore put runners on the corners and a dropped pick off attempt at first allowed Ribbens to score from third, bringing across the second run for the Squirrels. Van Sickler finished the frame via groundout with the Angels leading 3-2 going into the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, after a strikeout, Tim Verachtert singled and stole second to begin an eventful fifth inning. Juan Alcantara Reyes then hit a groundball to deep shortstop that Bellefroid could not handle, allowing Verachtert to advance to third. With runners on the corners and the score 3-2 in favor of the Angels, Van Sickler picked off Reyes at first for the second out of the inning. He then struck out Steven Delannoy to end the threat and escape the fifth inning. Van Sickler finished 5 innings of work giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks, and he struck out 9. Fellow American Jake Hummel came on in relief for Van Sickler, who although allowed the Squirrels to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, was able to make amends.

The devastating blow came in the top of the seventh inning. Squirrels’ starter Louis Larrinaga was lifted in the seventh after a leadoff hit by Adrien Geuquet. The Squirrel pitching staff brought in right-hander Anthony Winborne. His first batter was Hummel. With one aboard and with the first pitch he saw from Winborne, Hummel blasted it to deep left center and over the fence for a two run homerun. It was Hummel’s first and the Angels’ first homerun of the year. That two run shot put the Angels up 5-3 and they did not look back from then on. Winborne gave up four earned runs while walking four in his 1/3 innings of work. He was lifted in the inning for reliever Glenn Mareels, who got two fly outs to end the seventh. Michael Leys came in to pitch for the Squirrels in the eighth and surrendered three more Angels runs before the game was up. Hummel threw the final 4 innings, giving up 6 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. He finished 1-3 on the day with the game changing blast in the seventh inning. Williams Rosario also provided big offense for the Angels with a 3 run double in the first inning. The Angels are back in action on Saturday, April 21st against the Brasschaat Braves.
